Where are the electrons? ODYSSEY Atomic Orbitals is a 3D visualization tool for one of the most widely taught topics in the introductory chemistry curriculum: What are the size, shape, and relative orientation of the atomic orbitals? How do these properties vary from element to element? What electron configuration corresponds to which set of orbitals? The answers are now available on your iPad with the tap of a finger—state-of-the-art visualization to make a difficult subject more accessible.

ODYSSEY Atomic Orbitals provides visualization that complements the explanations and idealized pictures typically shown in textbooks. Uniquely, the app contains the results of quantum chemical calculations at high graphical resolution. The complete set of occupied atomic orbitals is available for 22 main group elements. Xenon (54 electrons) is the heaviest atom included. Intuitive gestures allow inspection of the orbitals at any orientation and zoom level. Electron density isosurfaces as well as color-coded cross sections can be examined. Multiple orbitals can be displayed simultaneously if so desired.

The full electron configuration as well as the magnetic behavior is listed for each of the included elements. In addition to showing the orbitals for specific elements, the shell structure of the atom is illustrated via a set of representative orbitals. The app also includes multiple choice questions (with randomized options), a glossary, and assorted comments.

Let ODYSSEY Atomic Orbitals be your ticket for gaining a more intuitive and visual understanding of this aspect of chemistry.
